SUKHBIR SEEKS SPECIAL ASSISTANCE TO STRENGTHEN PUNJAB POLICE FORCES

Chandigarh February 1:

            Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal will seek special financial assistance to further strengthen police forces in State to deal with critical concerns about Naxalism, terrorism, and the problem of narcotics. He will put these issues during the first day of all India State Chief Minister’s meet of Law and Order on Tuesday.

Highly-placed sources said that in the recent past, the problem of Naxalism is prevailing in Punjab and Deputy CM would take up the issue for discussion with the Union Home Minster P Chidambaram and would request him to look into the matter with serious concern. “To tackle the problems of drugs and modernisation of police force, Sukhbir will seek financial assistance as well,” told sources.

Deputy CM Sukhbir, State Principal Secretary (Home) AR Talwar and Punjab Director General of police (DGP) PS Gill will attend the two-day meet, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi. Home Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister AK Antony, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Ministers of State for Home Gurudas Kamat and Mullappally Ramachandran are scheduled to attend various sessions of the day-long meet, said a senior official of the State Government.

It is learnt that 27 years after the Khalistan movement pushed Punjab into a cycle of violence and instability, the State finds itself on the brink of another bloody movement of naxalism. Punjab DGP PS Gill has already penetrated the villages and mohallas in the State, posing a major threat to the security scenario. DGP claims that the Naxals have formed district committees, and are now running recruitment drives across Punjab.

Many farmers in the State, especially in the Malwa region, suffer from major debts and have even lost large chunks of land to greedy moneylenders. Sources said that the growth of Naxalism can be nipped in the bud if it is seen not as a law-and-order question, but a socio-economic one. They say effective Government policies are the best bet against Naxalism in Punjab. Modernisation of police force to gun down the high tech terrorists is the one among the major concern for Punjab.

“Being the border state, our police officials must be highly equipped and trained to gun down the terrorist at any situation,” said a senior police officer of Punjab while adding that they will try to fetch the Centre’s attention towards the modernisation of police force. Deputy CM may also ask the Centre to review the problems of drug addiction and drug peddling which is a serious concern subjected to the youth of the state. They may ask the Centre for the measures to prevent the drug peddling from the national borders and other States.
